My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat

Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

I hope you had a fantastic holiday season. It's great to be back with you after taking the last 3 weeks off from publishing. I was offline a lot during that time and had hundreds of emails to sort through when I got back. I think I replied to everyone who wrote me, but if I missed anyone, I sincerely apologize.

My daughter and son-in-law came to visit from New York. They arrived in the early evening on New Year's Day and stayed for 8 days. We had a wonderful time, although it was rather hectic.

When they headed back home the other day, they took my "baby" (she's 18) with them. She enrolled in college at the same school my older daughter attends. I've been out of sorts since she left - kind of bored and lonely at times. The house is really quiet.

My 19 year old son still lives at home, but he's hardly ever here, so I guess I'm suffering from "empty nest syndrome" even though the house isn't completely empty yet. LOL I suppose I better get used to it.

Ever since I moved into my new house at the end of November I haven't smoked inside. I dubbed the attached garage "the smoking area" and put a small table, an ashtray and a chair out there.

Two weeks ago while I was sitting out there smoking late one night, I suddenly saw a small black, furry thing running along the wall. I stood up so fast I almost knocked my chair over.

I quickly put out my cigarette and reached for the door to the house at the same time, never taking my eyes off the creature. I kept saying "what the he** is that?" which was dumb because I was the only one there. LOL

My daughter had just left to go pick up a male friend, so I called her on her cell phone and told her to bring him over here immediately. He managed to get a look at it as it escaped out a crevice. He said it was a shrew.

Eeeeeeeewwwwwwww! A rodent by any name is still a RODENT!

We thought it was gone, so he blocked up the crevice with some spray foam insulation to keep it out.

But two days later I saw it again! Eeeeeeeewwww!

To make matters worse, I saw another one the following day, running along two walls in the garage and finally escaping out a different crevice. I knew it was a second one because it wasn't jet black, it was dark grey.

My daughter's friend blocked up that spot, too. Then it was time to bring out the heavy artillary... glue traps!

My son-in-law put a trap in each corner of the garage and within 24 hours we got the dark grey one. Yay!

As for the black one... well, he's still driving me nuts! I thought he was gone because we hadn't seen any signs of him for 4 or 5 days. Then one of the traps was moved a bit the other day, so I knew he was still around. There were also droppings right next to the trap... it's like he's taunting me. LOL

I'm afraid there might be a whole family of them. I don't want them in the garage, but I'm really fearful that they'll find a way to get into the house. Double eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww!

We put more traps out, so my fingers are crossed that I get him soon. Listen to me - I'm saying "we" like I had a hand in it. Not me! I call my daughter's friends to come over and handle the situation if my son isn't here. I'm a big chicken! LOL

OK, on to a bit of 'net news, then I'll let you get on with the rest of the issue...

A very good offline friend told me yesterday that she reached eBay PowerSeller status. To become a PowerSeller you must do $1000 in sales a month for 3 months. She had no previous online marketing experience and she's only been selling on eBay for about a year. She's living proof that the "little guy" can make money online. Go check out what she's doing here:

Don't forget I'm only publishing every two weeks now, so the next issue will be on January 28th. Until then, be profitable!

Feature Article

Three Keys to Succeeding This Year
(c) Charlie Page
http://www.RealWorldTactics.com

When it comes to succeeding online - whether that means starting your own online business, earning money as an affiliate, or something more, there is a world of confusion.

Create a niche site, some say. But that's easier said than done.

Publish an ezine, say others. But what would you have to say?

Become a super affiliate we often hear. Again .. HOW?

In the years I've been online I have been blessed indeed to be able to learn what I needed to know to succeed.

Sometimes I learned from others examples. Sometimes I learned from watching others mistakes. And sometimes I learned from painful (and costly) trial and error.

Based on all of that, I'd like to share with you three keys that I believe can help every one of you succeed this year, and beyond.

---> 1. Know Yourself

The good thing about the Internet is that there are so many different ways to make money.

And ... the bad thing about the Internet is that there are so many different ways to make money. ;)

So what's a boy (or girl) to do?

Know yourself. Respond to what feels right, what sounds right to you.

Remember what you learned as a youth -- if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Nowhere is that more true that on the Internet where scams and snake-oil salesmen abound.

So, how *specifically* does 'knowing yourself' help you succeed online?

Here's how.

If you are losing sleep over the ability to pay your bills and need some very fast money you may be much better off getting a second job for a while than 'starting an online business'.

I know -- that's not the advice you are used to hearing. But it's the advice I would give my daughter.

A bird in the hand still beats two in the bush, and making any real money online when you are just starting out is hard. Very hard.

Here's another example.

If you are staying up until the wee hours of the morning viewing site after site that sound too good to be true then you are headed for trouble.

Someone is about to pick your pocket.

It might be with the promise of huge commissions or of doing all the work for you (why would they do that?) but one way or the other they are going to take your money. So be careful. Very careful.

---> 2. Get Off The Opportunity Treadmill

What does that mean? It means stop looking for the next big thing and start looking for the next real thing.

Specifically, if a business you are considering does not make sense to you but is asking you to 'trust them' please don't.

Business online is just like business offline. Those who stick with things succeed. Those who jump around don't.

Nowhere is this more evident that in network marketing. I've read, but not confirmed, that the average person starting out in network marketing stays with the program they choose for less than 90 days.

My friend, no one succeeds at anything new in less than 90 days ... especially if they are doing that business part time.

So, forget the word 'opportunity' for a moment and focus on the word business.

Is the business you are considering delivering a real product? Does that product help people achieve meaningful goals? Do you understand how the business works? Could you explain the business to your best friend and be comfortable?

If you answered yes to all of these questions you have the beginning of a basis to go into a business.

If not, run.

---> 3. Focus

We touched on this above but it is *so* important that I want to hover here for a moment more.

To succeed online (or offline for that matter) you will have to focus on *one* thing at a time.

Focus your attention
Focus your resources
Focus your passion
Focus your time

If you learn to focus your resources in this way on *one* thing and prove that it is for you (or that it is not for you) you will succeed faster. Period.

How can you focus?

Think of something you want to accomplish. It might be a business you are considering or a new site you want to build or a way to advertise a product.

Now examine that from the outside in and then the inside out and then examine it again.

Ask questions. Be a skeptic. Check out testimonials to be sure they are real. Ask people who have succeeded with the idea you are pursuing.

Now go further and Google something about the idea to see what people are saying and to check the validity of any sites you might be considering.

Once you *know* that you want to move ahead take action and give it your all.

Only then can you know what will work for you!

One last word - the fact that something doesn't work the first time does not mean that it will not work.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the world of advertising where beginning advertisers wrongly think they can run one ad and have it succeed.

Professional advertisers know that it takes testing - and patience - to make an ad campaign work.

If your first attempt at something fails consider analyzing why and trying again before moving on to something else.

Use your focus to discover how to do better on the next try.

The list of people who failed on their first try and then went on to greatness is legion.

In the coming weeks I will be publishing a series of VERY specific articles about how to succeed online.

If you have read any of my books, you will know that these articles will contain no fluff and be very actionable indeed.

If you have not read any of my books - there are 10 now - you can see them here.

I hope you enjoy the articles. And I hope that this year is your best year ever.

May it be so for us all.

A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street.

"But officer," the man began, "I can explain..."

"Just be quiet," snapped the officer. "I'm going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back."

"But, officer, I just wanted to say..."

"And I said to keep quiet! You're going to jail!"

A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, "Lucky for you that the chief's at his daughter's wedding. He'll be in a good mood when he gets back."

"Don't count on it," answered the fellow in the cell. "I'm the groom."

Expert Advice

Each week I'll publish some tips or advice. I'll try to cover every subject I can think of, but if you have any suggestions, please send them to me at the e-mail address listed below.

9 Killer Ways To Sell Your Back-End Products

A back-end product is a product you attempt to sell your customers after they have recently purchased a related product from your business.

If you're not trying to sell back-end products to your customers, you're making a big mistake. It's easier to sell to existing customers than it is to sell to new ones who don't trust your business yet.

Below are nine killer strategies you can use to sell your back-end products to your existing customers:

1. When you ship people the first product they bought, insert a flyer or brochure for your back-end product in the package.

2. Give customers a free subscription to a "customers only" ezine when they buy your product. You could include your ad for your back-end product in each issue.

3. Send your customers greeting cards on holidays or on their birthday. Include a small advertisement inside the card for your back-end product.

4. After people order your first product from your web site, take them to a "thank you" web page and include your back-end product ad on that page.

5. Send customers a free surprise gift after they order your first product. You could attach another ad with the free gift for your back-end product.

6. If you're selling an electronic product, like an ebook, include your ad for your back-end product somewhere inside the electronic product.

7. Give your customers a free membership to your "customers only" private site. You could include your ad for your back-end product somewhere inside the private site.

8. Send your customers a thank you letter by mail or e-mail. You could mention your back-end product somewhere in the letter.

9. Ask your customers if they want to be updated in the future when you have new product offers. You could have them sign up to receive e-mail or snail mail updates.

Your business will have a greater chance of surviving when you attempt to sell back-end products to your existing customers.
