My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat

Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, welcome! A special thanks to the 400+ new subscribers who joined from the Free PLR Giveaway this past week. I hope you enjoy the issue.

There's been some stuff going on lately that just really gets my goat! I'm talking about marketers with no ethics - poor customer service, offering over-priced crappy products and even treating their subscribers like dirt. And that's putting it mildly.

Almost a month ago I bought a monthly membership to a new site. I was really excited about it because it allows me to use a web-based script instead of installing the script at my site. Being the techie-challenged person that I am, I thought this was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

However, I had a question about it, so I emailed the owner. After 2 days I hadn't gotten a reply, so I emailed again. 2 days later while looking around the site I noticed a link to his helpdesk. I filled out a support ticket.

That was January 20th and I still don't have a reply!

Now, I'm the type of person to give the benefit of the doubt whenever possible. Emails get lost in cyberspace or missed in cluttered inboxes. I noticed that he didn't send any messages to his list for quite some time. I thought maybe he was sick or had a family emergency or a computer crash, so I waited.

Well, two days ago he sent a message to his list and seeing his name in my inbox reminded me that I didn't have an answer to my question yet. So I hit reply and emailed him again.

Guess what happened? I got a #*$%# autoreply telling me he'd gotten so busy he had to hire an assistant and to please submit a ticket at his helpdesk! The helpdesk was at a different domain than the one I'd opened a ticket at before, so I did it.

Once again, giving the benefit of the doubt because I submitted the ticket at 4 PM on Friday and maybe the guy doesn't work on the weekends, I'm waiting until tomorrow to blow my cool. But if at the end of the day tomorrow I don't have an answer, I'll be cancelling my monthly subscription before I'm charged again.

Did I lose a lot of money? No. The service is only $7 a month. But that's not the point. I've never heard anything bad about this guy and always thought he was reputable. This was the first product I bought from him, I think, but I can guarantee I won't buy another one.

If that's not bad enough, I recently saw another marketer who had the audacity to tell his subscribers to get off his list if they weren't going to buy anything!

His email subject line was "Unsubscribe from my list" and the body of the email basically said something about him being there to bring his subscribers good products to help them with their business, but if they weren't going to buy them there's no use in being on his list.

How rude!

The following day he sent out a half-a**ed apology, but the jist of it was still "I'm here to sell you stuff and if you're not going to buy anything, then I don't want you on my list."

Let me repeat myself - how rude!

Now, obviously, we're all in business to make money, and we all know the money is in the list. But how does this guy know that even though a subscriber didn't buy his current offering, they won't buy the next or the next or the next?

I tend to think maybe he hadn't done very well with his recent promos and he was ticked off about it. But did he really think that was the way to make sales? Yea, that'll make me buy! NOT!

But wait! This guy's story gets even better...

About a week ago he sent a message with an offer "for one lucky subscriber only." Out of curiousity, I had to check it out.

Well, if this wasn't the deal of the year!

For only $1,895.00 I could get my own "profitable list of 25,000 fresh, opt-in subscribers" plus 4 or 5 ebooks that would show me how to generate a profit from my new list!

And that's not all! With such a huge list, I could actually charge advertisers $297 for a solo ad to send out to my new list right away... starting from day 1!

Puh-leeeeeze! This is a list of uncultivated co-registration leads, not a list of people who want information specifically from the poor subscriber who buys it from him.

Chances are, many will unsubscribe immediately, and those who don't may or may not eventually buy something. Yet he makes it out to be a list of people who will open up their wallets and the new list owner will rake in thousands within 30 days. (Yes, he really said that.)

Oh, and even if the "lucky" list owner manages to sell some solo ads, no matter what the price, the advertisers probably won't make any sales. No sales means they won't be repeat advertisers and they'll probably tell their friends not to waste their money advertising to that list.

Now, I know he didn't sell that "opt-in list" the first day he promoted it because he sent out a follow-up message the next day. Either that or he lied about only selling one list. But nevertheless, in the follow-up he accused his readers of having a "brain freeze" or "forgetting how to read" because no one had responded to his offer!

I can't believe the crock of BS this guy told his readers, then had the gall to insult them when they didn't buy into it! He should have called his product "Bullsh** 101" because at least I could give him credit for truth in advertising - the "lucky" subscriber who took him up on his offer would know what s/he really purchased.

OK, enough of my ranting. It's time to let you get on with the rest of the issue. Be sure to check out the Bargain Basement section below for some really great deals.

I'll see you in two weeks with the next issue. Until then, be profitable!

10 Useful Ways to Strategise For Success In 2007
© By Eva Browne-Paterson - www.EvieB.com

It's the end of January already and that time has flown don't you agree? Well they say time flies when you're having fun right?

What if you're not having fun with your internet business?

Then it's time to take a step back and rethink your strategies for the year. I mean, you really deserve to have some fun and to be successful.

First you need to organise yourself and get rid of the time-wasting tasks, then strategise to achieve your goals.

I suggest you sit down at your computer and copy the following questions to a MS Word or Notepad document and answer them honestly. It's a productive way to effectively generate a good road-map to follow for your success this year.

1. Change Your Habits

Do you have any 'bad' habits? For instance, do you find that you're often getting stuck surfing sites or shopping when you should be working? If that's the case, then I want you to identify the 'bad' habits and right them down. Consciously make an effort to avoid those 'bad' habits when you're working. Hey it's okay to do that surfing and shopping in your leisure time. Change your work habits to good, productive habits. They're much more satisfying.

2. Learn To Focus

Are you continually sidetracked? When you have 'so much to do', but don't know where to start -- and you find you're doing a bit of this and a bit of that but not actually finishing anything... Then it's time to focus on one job at a time. Allot yourself time to complete a task and carry it out from start to finish. If it's not related to email, then close your email program while you are concentrating on the task.

3. Cut Down On Time-Consuming Activities

Do you know how many things you actually do each day online? Consider writing down what you've done in one day and reviewing where you've been and what you've been doing. Looking at your history is a good way to achieve this. You'd be surprised how many sites you can visit in just one day... Now circle the places that you didn't need to visit because you didn't achieve anything by visiting those sites. Resist the temptation to check out every site you come across and only visit the sites you plan to visit for a reason and you'll save precious time.

4. Automate Repeated Tasks

Are you repeating certain tasks over and over again? Depending on the task, there's usually a way to automate it to save you even more time. For instance, if you keep typing the same email repeatedly, then you can use a program like Type Pilot to save the text and automatically insert it into emails with a couple of keyboard clicks, instead of spending time retyping the text. You can download this handy free tool here:
http://www.evieb.com/typepilot.exe

If you're repeating other tedious, maintenance-type tasks that could easily be carried out by someone else, then why not consider outsourcing to have that work done for you by someone else. When you look at many of the highly successful people online, you'll find that they're not doing it all on their own. Bite the bullet and get some practical help.

5. Cut Down On Wasteful Outgoings

Do you know how many PayPal and credit card subscriptions you have right now? If you're unsure, then you'd better rush over to your online accounts and copy the details of your current subscriptions so you can keep on top of your outgoings. Review your subscriptions and work out which ones are wasteful - and that's any that aren't bringing you a return or that you aren't using to the full potential. Cancel them and downgrade your account or close your account with the program altogether. Finding a free alternative is another good option, especially for programs that you've been a member of for several years. Search for cheaper or free alternatives. They are out there!

6. Set Your Business Goals

Now you need to write down your specific goals for 2007. Start with smaller goals. For instance, in one week I'd like to [your goal]. Then write down a goal for the next 30 days and where you'd like to be or what you'd like to achieve. Try not to make it all about money... But it can be if you're SPECIFIC. Other suggestions for goals you can set for yourself are things like:

-> Increasing the size of your list.
-> Increasing the number of affiliates in your program.
-> Increasing the number of sales you make over a specific period of time.
-> Creating your own product or web site by a particular date.
-> Earning a specific amount in a particular program by a specific date.
-> Referring a particular number of affiliates to a program by a specific date.
-> Spending less time online and achieving more results.
-> Saving a particular amount of money in your bank from online earnings by a specific date.

Do you get the idea? It's not that hard when you actually sit down and write down your goals. Once you get the hang of it, and especially once you start achieving your goals, then it's much easier to start setting longer-term goals like six month and 12 month goals.

7. Identify Your Needs

Once you know what your goals are for the upcoming year, you need to know how you will achieve them. Ask yourself questions like these:

-> "What do I need to accomplish this first part?" For instance, if you need your own domain name, go straight to www.godaddy.com and search for the domain name and register it. This takes about ten minutes to complete. Sometimes the first part of a goal includes research. If that's the case, set yourself the appropriate time to carry out the necessary research and decide on your course of action.

-> "What tools do I need to have to carry out this action?" For instance, if you want to start your own membership site, you might need to purchase a script to manage the program. This is in fact one of my own goals to accomplish by the end of February. I recommend the amazing, top-of-the-line program that I've been using. You can see it here:
http://www.evieb.com/likes/easymemberpro

Please note, there are always free scripts that you can download from the internet. You just need to search for them and review the functionality to see if they do all that you want them to do.

-> "What skills do I need to carry out these tasks?" Identify the required skills and if you don't have them, learn them or ask someone you know with those skills for help, or pay someone to do those tasks for you. It really is easy to find out how to do almost anything when you have the internet at your fingertips...

8. Make A Plan

Now that you know what you want and you know what you need, write down a rough plan of how and when you will be able to do these things yourself, or to get someone else to do them. Give yourself ample time to set everything up, carry out each particular task and to make your goal achievable. Don't be hard on yourself. Remember to prioritise in order of importance. Display your plan in an obvious spot where you can see it from your computer and cross off each part as it's completed. You can even use Task Manager in MS Outlook for this. The reminders are very helpful and easy to set as well.

9. Review Regularly

By now you should be feeling pretty optimistic about where you're headed this year. Make a point of continually reviewing, updating, and marking your progress along the way -- ensuring that you reward yourself for achieving those smaller goals. It's very important.

10. Increase Your Optimism

If you're the type of person who thinks they don't deserve success, and that's not entirely your own fault, then you'll be needing to increase your optimism almost continually. Actually achieving your short-term goals is a very good way to remain optimistic because you're really doing it! Ask yourself these questions:

-> "Am I thinking any negative thoughts that can hold me back?"
-> "Am I allowing my friend's comments to get me down?"
-> "Do I think I can't afford to take the necessary steps to achieve my goals?"
-> "Do I really think I can do this?"

If you answered negatively to any of those questions, you'll need to keep telling yourself that you CAN do it and you WILL do it to succeed. Just look around you on the Internet... There are many people from very humble backgrounds that are making an honest income online that's increasing every day. You can do it too. I have no doubt about it... All you have to do is start once and for all and stick to your plan.

Here's to YOUR success in 2007.

A violinist is playing a concert at Carnegie Hall. He finishes the piece. Voices in the audience shout, "Again! Play it again!"

The violinist is pleased. He plays the piece all the way through a second time. "Again!" the voices shout once more. "Play it again!"

The musician's self-satisfaction knows no bounds: this is Carnegie Hall, and I'm asked to play not one, but two encores?

When he finishes, the voices rise yet a third time, and the same thing happens after several more repetitions.

Incredulous, the violinist finally walks to the front of the stage and addresses the audience: "Seven encores of the same piece at Carnegie Hall? It's unheard of! Am I that good?"

The audience members shout as one voice: "You'll do it until you get it right!"

Expert Advice

Each week I'll publish some tips or advice. I'll try to cover every subject I can think of, but if you have any suggestions, please send them to me at the e-mail address listed below.

Avoiding Home Business Scams

If you're thinking of working from home you have to realize that many of the offers out there are scams. Here are some tips on how to recognize them and how to avoid them.

Envelope Stuffing is one of the most established work from home scams. The way it works is, once you pay your money and sign up to work from home, you are sent a set of envelopes and ads just like the one you responded to. Then you stuff your envelopes and pay to send them out. You could make some money if someone responds to your ad, but the chances are slim. Don't waste your money on this one.

Home assemblers wanted. Charging for supplies is hard to pin down to any one scam. It's the way almost all work-at-home scams work. First you will be asked to invest in the materials needed to do the work and then you will be sent very cheap materials that aren't worth anything near what you paid for them. Once the product is assembled you'll find that there's no one who will buy it.

Quick tip: If anyone asks for money up front run away fast. A real company should be willing to deduct any ‘fees’ from your first paycheck. If they won't do that for you, then it might be because they don't ever plan to pay you.

A variation of this scam is that you might be asked to work at home making clothes, ornaments or toys. Everything seems legitimate - you got the materials without paying out any money and you're doing the work. Unfortunately for you, when you send the work back, the company will tell you that it didn't meet their ‘quality standards’ and will refuse to pay you. Never do craft work from home unless you're selling the items yourself.

Now let's discuss home typing and medical billing scams. There are lots of work from home scams that will lead you to believe that they have more work than they can handle so they need people to work from home. What will happen? You will be told that you would be typing documents or entering medical bills into a computer. These scams have one thing in common. They say all you need is your computer and then all you have to do is buy their special software to do the job.

This software might appear to be from a completely unrelated company, but don't be fooled. The whole reason the work from home ad was there to begin with was as a sneaky way to sell you their software.

Be very careful when looking for legitimate ways to make money from home and remember this rule of thumb - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
