My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat
Hi All! Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue. I hope you're having spring weather wherever you live. (If it's springtime.) We still have a lot of snow on the ground, but it's been slowly melting over the last few days. I doubt that Mother Nature is going to let us get off easy, though. We usually have one or two good snowstorms in April, so we'll see what happens. LOL In the last issue I mentioned a book that was being released on March 25th called Mistaken Identity. The story made world news two years ago when 2 college students were mixed up at the scene of a horrific car accident. One died and the other was alive but in a coma fighting for her life. Then 5 weeks later, in a strange twist of fate, the parents of the girl in the hospital bed realized that the girl they'd been caring for 24/7 was not their daughter after all. Instead, she was Whitney Cerak (from my town) who had been believed dead at the scene of the accident. I had pre-ordered the book and picked it up from the bookstore the day it was released but haven't had time to read it yet. My daughter read it though, and she said it was excellent! With the release of the book the two families appeared on the Today Show and Dateline NBC a few days ago. They'll also be on Oprah this coming Tuesday or Wednesday. (I'm not sure which day. Our local newspaper reported 2 different dates.) Everyone wanted to know how this could happen, and especially how Laura's parents didn't know for 5 weeks that it wasn't Laura in the hospital bed. After hearing the whole story from both families on TV it became much more clear. These two families are amazing people! With everything that happened it would have been easy to be angry with each other, but instead they bonded together, leaned on each other, and have become great friends. If everyone had the kind of heart the Ceraks and Van Ryns have, the world would be a much better place. Their story is truly one of hope, love, courage and inspiration. It's heart-wrenching, yet heart-warming at the same time. Very powerful stuff! Generating Free Traffic From Directories Traffic from online directories is highly effective because you are building a stable of one-way back links to your site. When done correctly, this will increase your visibility in the major search engines (for example Google), and increase the "link popularity" of your site. This is important because the vast majority of people who go online to search for something will begin their hunt by typing in a search word or phrase at Google, Yahoo or MSN. That's not to say that this is the way that all internet traffic is generate, as I will explain in a minute, but this is generally most people's starting point. You, as the site owner, want your website to appear on the first or second page of the search, because that's pretty much as far as any searcher will ever look. If you are on page one or two, you will get visitors to your site, visitors who have searched using a phrase that is related to your site. They represent targeted traffic, which is just about the best form of traffic there is. But search engines are only half the story. You need to get links, too, and that is where directory submissions for your site become critically important. Here's what you need to know about directory submissions... Directories are websites that will allow you to list your website with them, generally categorized by the subject matter or topic of your site. If your site is about dogs, and someone searched in that particular directory for a dog-related site, then they should end up looking at the dog category of the directory, and may very well end up on your site. So the first purpose of getting listed on a directory site is simply to help other people searching that directory to find your web pages. Second, and perhaps even more importantly, is the fact that all of these directories, by listing your site, will create incoming links for you. What does this mean? Well, think about the last time you were trying to find something online. You searched with your favorite search engine (or maybe from a directory site), and visited a website that you found in the results listing. You browsed around the site, but what did you do then? Maybe you went back to the search engine, but, more likely, you saw an interesting link on that site pointing you to another similar site, and you followed that. That is the power of linking as far as human website visitors are concerned. We all love to follow links. This is a perfect example of creating traffic from online networking, as the owners of the two sites in question agreed with one another to establish links between them. However, note that I used the phrase 'incoming' links earlier. Links from one site to another and then back again in the opposite direction are not 'incoming' links. It's important to understand that links can be of different types, and that, of those different types of links, some are more important and carry more weight than others. One way, incoming links are the most powerful form of links that there are. Other people are linking to your site without you linking to them. This tells the search engines that your site is some kind of 'authority figure' and that is very significant. For example, if you, as owner of site A agree to link to site B, owned by your friend, and he (or she) does the same the other way, that is a reciprocal or two way link. It's good, but not anywhere near as good as one-way, incoming links. One-way, incoming links tell the search engines that your site is popular, and that they should be paying attention to you and listing your site. Another factor about getting links from the directory sites is that they are highly targeted, because your site is listed on the directory web pages under the category that is most appropriate to it. Going back to the dog site example, incoming links from other dog sites indicate that your site is an authority site about dogs. That's clearly what you want to be seen as, an authority on your subject, as this will drive the most accurately targeted traffic to your site. If, on the other hand, you are getting incoming links from pop music or video sites, for example, then that does nothing but confuse the issue, and can actually be harmful to the way your site is rated. Many of the best directory sites are also very highly rated as well. For example, Google has a system where they give webpages a rank (called Page Rank) that is supposed to reflect how popular a website is, in terms of the visitors it attracts, the number of other sites that link to it, and so on. The Google PR system runs from a 0 rank right up to 10, which indicates that a website is hugely popular. Some of the directories are very high on this Google PR scale (and on other similar ranking systems, too), with several rating an 8 or 9, and a link from such a directory also helps validate your one way-incoming links as well! And, do you know the single most attractive feature of submitting your site to the directories? Its generally free! And, with 508 free directories listed on a page such as http://www.onewaytextlink.com/links.php?type=free it becomes abundantly clear that submitting your site to directories could give you a massive boost in the targeted traffic that your site receives, at literally no cost. Maintain a goal of submitting your site to small niche directories on a weekly basis and you'll be generating traffic in no time.
