My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat

Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

First of all, Happy Easter, Passover or whatever you celebrate. I hope you're enjoying some quality time with your family. And don't eat too much chocolate. :~)

Wow! The weather sure did an about face, at least in some parts of the U.S. We were just seeing the first signs of spring and suddenly we had a blizzard! Yep, seriously. We had a blizzard on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday wasn't much better, but yesterday the snow had slacked off quite a bit.

The temperature is supposed to slowly rise back up to 40 by next Friday. Geez! The snow had finally finished melting, and then it came back. Maybe by the end of this month it will be gone for good. LOL

In the last issue I told you that the Extreme Makeover Home Edition bus had arrived in the city in New York where my two daughters live. The house is finished now and from the pictures I've seen it's absolutely gorgeous!

My daughters and son-in-law attended a benefit concert that was put on by country singers Clay Walker and Neal McCoy. They were in the front row and had a great time. They said the concert yielded $18,000 for the deserving family.

My son-in-law was one of 1,000 volunteers hand-picked from over 10,000 applicants so he felt honored to be a part of it. He got to paint part of the inside of the house. Knowing him, his name is etched somewhere in that house. LOL

If you'd like to see the pictures, starting from the design team showing up and surprising the family to "move that bus," you can check them out at the construction company's website here:

Extreme Makeover Home Edition

If you click each picture it will take you to a slide show for each day of the construction.

Oh, and another really neat thing... the day the woman and her kids were presented with their new home was the woman's birthday. What a great birthday gift!

OK, it's time to let you get on with the rest of the issue. Don't miss the Expert Advice column. It contains some serious credit card and phishing scam warnings.

Did you get your Easter gifts yet? If not, go grab them now:

Easter Gifts

I'll see you in two weeks. Until then, be profitable!

Denise

How to Avoid the Internet Marketing Junkyard
(c) Charlie Page
http://www.RealWorldTactics.com

[Publisher's note: Due to a comment in this article about Corey Rudl, I assume this article was written a couple of years ago. But it's good information, no matter what year you read it.]

Have you noticed how many programs come and go on the Internet? Ever wonder why?

They say that the majority of small businesses fail during their first two years. On the Internet it's more like the first 90 days.

How can programs that seem so hot today be gone tomorrow?

And how can you avoid wasting time on programs that promise the moon only to deliver disappointment?

Here are three ways to spot a business that will pass the test of time, and avoid those that are destined for the Internet marketing junkyard.

===> Is The Product Good?

Companies that focus on recruiting instead of providing great products and services will fail in the long run. These companies always seem like the next big thing, and end up in the junkyard every time.

If the focus is on how much money you can make by recruiting, run away as fast as you can.

To be sure, there IS a role for recruiting others into a business that you are succeeding in. A big role because sharing real success is a very good thing.

But when the site wants you to recruit before you succeed, or their program is all about recruitment, or their claims are untrue, there's just no way that anyone will succeed except those who own the company.

No one can show you how to succeed unless they've done it first ... period.

The BEST sites provide products and services that solve real problems, create real value, and have outstanding customer service.

===> Don't Believe The Lies

All of these hyped up sites are going to tell you the same lies. Here are the top three lies they tell.

1. Get In Early Or You Will Lose Out.

If this were true, Corey Rudl would fail right now. The reason Corey succeeds is that his information stands the test of time. It's not a fad, it's not a trick, and it works. And selling his products works too.

Anytime a site is pushing you to sign up based on fear (do it now or lose your chance) it's a sure sign they are headed for the junkyard, and you will waste time and money with them.

2. We Will Do The Work For You.

I love this one. Why in the world would anyone build a downline under you, when they could just go out and build a bigger downline under themselves?

They wouldn't, and they won't.

Some say that the makeup of their "matrix" means they do better by building *your* business than their own. Give me a break. If that were true, they'd build a downline under their mother, not you.

Helping is one thing. Giving advice is one thing. But when they say that they will do the work *for* you, run as fast as you can.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

Doing the work for you, after you pay a small fee of course, is a lie every time.

3. You Won't Have To Spend More Money.

That is, unless you are serious about your success. Those who are serious order our high quality leads, and use our oh so affordable back office.

Do you see the scam at work here? When they recruit you only to sell you leads, they are not telling the truth.

===> Stay Informed

The best way to avoid these companies is to know the truth. Sunlight is indeed the best disinfectant.

When I need to find information about a program, there is one site I visit. Here's the address.

http://www.scambusters.org/

Use this as a starting point, and learn how to spot the telltale signs of a company that's about to waste your time, take your money, and end up in the junkyard.

The Internet is ripe with real opportunity for those who are willing to do a little work, and learn the skills needed to succeed.

But the Net works just like the real world in this way. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you use your common sense, and make sure that the businesses you get involved with pass the duck test, you can look forward to a long and happy future of success on the Internet.

And that's a beautiful thing indeed!

A blonde goes into work one morning crying her eyes out. Her boss, concerned about all his employees' well being, asked sympathetically, "What's the matter?"

To which the blonde replies: "Early this morning I got a phone call saying that my mother had passed away."

The boss, feeling very sorry at this point, says to the young girl. "Why don't you go home for the day...we aren't terribly busy. Just take the day off to relax and rest."

The blonde very calmly states, "No, I'd be better off here. I need to keep my mind off it and I have the best chance of doing that here."

The boss agrees and allows the blonde to work as usual. "If you need anything, just let me know."

Well, a few hours pass and the boss decides to check on the blonde. He looks out over his office and sees her hysterically crying!! He rushes out to her, asking,

"What's the problem...are you gonna be ok??"

"No...." exclaims the blonde. "I just got a call from my sister.

She told me that HER mom died too!!"

Expert Advice

Each week I'll publish some tips or advice. I'll try to cover every subject I can think of, but if you have any suggestions, please send them to me at the e-mail address listed below.

I'm doing something a little different in today's column. I want to warn you about some credit card scams and an online social site scam to watch out for.

This one happened to me, not once but twice, in the last 2 weeks.

I got a phone call from a strange phone number - the caller ID showed that the number was 2-998-287-3507. I immediately knew it was an overseas number because of the extra digit.

When I answered the phone I heard an automated voice telling me they could save me money on my credit card interest by lowering my rate to 6.99%, and it also said in order to qualify I must have at least $2500 in debt. If I was interested, please press 1.

Now remember, I knew something was fishy because I saw the overseas number on my caller ID. But if I didn't have caller ID I might have thought this was really my credit card company.

I pressed 1 and an American-sounding woman said "hello." I said I was interested in lowering my interest rate, and asked what credit card she was calling about. I had noticed that neither the automated message, nor this live person, had identified what company they were calling from.

She said, "your Visa." Hmmmmmm... she STILL didn't identify the company. I tried to get her to elaborate by telling her I have more than one card and that's why I wondered which one she was calling about. She said "oh" and giggled a little! I assume I caught her slightly off guard.

Then she went on to ask if I had my credit card handy. I told her no, and she asked if I could get it. I said I don't like to give out my information over the phone and asked if they could mail me the details of their low interest offer and she hung up!

Even if I didn't know that it was an overseas phone number, I would have smelled a rat because the company wasn't identified. (Visa is not a company. But Chase Bank, for instance, is a company that offers Visa cards so she should have said they were calling from Chase Bank Visa or something similar.)

If I had gotten out my credit card, she would have asked for the card number, I'm sure. But if they really were from my credit card company they would already have my card number. I wouldn't need to give it to them.

I'm not sure why there was the stipulation that I had to have at least $2500 worth of debt to "qualify" for this offer, but I assume if I had stayed on the line with her, she would have eventually asked how much my credit limit is, as well as how much I've used or had left available. They probably wanted to know how much money they could charge before a red flag would go up and decline the card for being over the limit.

The second phone call I got 2 weeks later came from the same overseas phone number, but there was a completely different twist in the way they were trying to get my credit card number.

This time the automated message said they were calling from a company called Cancun [something or other] Vacations and my household had been selected to receive an 11 day Cancun/Orlando vacation for only $99 a person. If I was interested in this offer please press 9.

Well, I didn't press 9 because I knew they would ask for my card number to charge the $99 per person to, and of course, there would really be no vacation forthcoming. The only thing I would get is a huge credit card bill for stuff I didn't purchase.

What really worries me is that they used options 1 and 9. What the heck do they have in between there? There are 7 other numbers they're probably also using to con people out of their credit card numbers using various scams.

Just yesterday a friend reminded me of another credit card scam that's been going on for awhile, but it's worth mentioning again so you can be aware if you get one of these phone calls.

The person calling says, "This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA." (Or MasterCard - they use both.) "My Badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank).

Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in Arizona?" When you say "No," the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?"

You say "yes." The caller continues - "I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number." The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"

It sounds VERY legitimate, but here's the IMPORTANT part of how the scam works...

The caller then says, "I need to verify you are in possession of your card." He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers. There are 7 numbers, the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card." The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him.

Notice the callers don't ask for your card number - they already have it!

There are numerous ways they could have gotten it, but what they need from you is the 3 digit security number that would enable them to make purchases by phone or Internet using YOUR card.

Please, please, please be very careful with your credit card numbers or other personal information. It's unfortunate, but we live in a world full of thieves who wouldn't think twice about ruining your credit or your life by stealing whatever they can get from you.

And here's a new Internet social website that apparently ISN'T very friendly. This note came from Internet marketer Dan Blackburn.

"Tagged.com is a password phishing site geared towards stealing your identity.

After creating an account at tagged.com you have to enter your Yahoo username and password (or what ever email account you specified at sign up) to gain access to the site.

Why does tagged.com want your email username and password? So they can read your email, pretend to be you and spam all your friends."

Dan brings up a good point that they can spam your friends, BUT I see another potential issue here. If you keep your logins and passwords for PayPal, ClickBank, etc. in your email folders they can get those, too.

They could change the mailing address for your affiliate checks to be sent to, get your bank account number or credit card number that you have listed in PayPal and/or change or add a new email address to your PayPal account. Etc., etc.

If you've opened an account at Tagged.com, I'd suggest you close it immediately and then change all your logins and passwords for PayPal or anything else they might have gotten their hands on.
