My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat

Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

Are you having spring weather yet (if you're in the northern hemisphere) in your neck of the woods? We had snow overnight Friday and all through yesterday. Yuck! No yard and flowerbed cleanup for me yet. LOL I guess I can't really complain, though, because last year we had two big snowstorms in the first half of April.

Last weekend we had some sunny, mid-50's weather, though, and about 25% of my yard was completely uncovered from all the snow. Then I noticed something has been burrowing around in the backyard. There were little 'runs' in the dirt with holes dug in them, tearing up my grass and flowerbeds.

I called an exterminator and he said the runs are from voles (mice-like rodents... eeeeeeewwww!) and the best way to get rid of them is with poison. He only traps varmints and takes them away, so I had to call another exterminator company. They'll be here next week.

But the guy who was here said there's been a skunk and a racoon hanging around, and possibly living under my deck. YUCK! So he set some traps by the deck, but I haven't caught anything yet.

Last year I had earwigs in the house really bad. Now I've got rodents in the yard and I sure don't want THEM in the house! I thought this was a good house when I bought it almost a year and a half ago. Now maybe I know the reason the former owner (an older lady) was selling it. LOL

One final quick note, then I'll let you get on with the rest of the issue...

Have you read the book, Mistaken Identity, or did you see any of the TV shows that were recently on about it? If you've been keeping up with my newsletter, you know that Whitney Cerak (the girl who was believed dead, but is actually alive) is from my town.

Yesterday her parents did a book signing at the local bookstore. There were hundreds of people there, which was really good because the bookstore is making a donation to a Bible Camp for every signed copy they sold.

The book was released less than 3 weeks ago, but it's already #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list. It's a very powerful story, so hitting #1 doesn't surprise me, but I didn't expect it to be #1 so quickly. On the best seller list fast, yes, but not #1 right away.

If you want to read more about the whole thing, you can visit my Squidoo lens:

Mistaken Identity

OK, time for the rest of the issue. There are two great articles below, and some free reports, too, so don't miss a thing.

I'll see you here in two weeks. Until then, be profitable!

Generating Free Traffic From Blogs

Blogs began life several years ago as online personal journal sites, almost like personal online diaries.

Since then, blogs have developed into one of the most popular forms of websites, and many are now highly professional and business-like, targeted at specific topics or markets.

They have, in fact, evolved to the point where some of the most popular and most regularly visited sites on the internet are blogs. Many such sites are rightly considered to be authority sites, and enjoy massive numbers of visitors every day.

Let's look at why this is so, and how you can begin to use the power of blogs and blogging to achieve similar results.

First, blogs are incredibly easy to use.

Blogging is a simple matter of writing whatever it is that you want to say onto the screen, and pressing a button! That's it – whatever you just created has been published for the whole wide world to see. Some people say, "if you can email, you can blog."

You can also include pictures, videos, spoken and music audios and so forth.

In other words, your blog site can be changed several times a day if you want, with little or no effort.

That makes it very easy to build a loyal readership for your site, by keeping it regularly updated to ensure that people want to come back time and again, to see what you have to say.

Make it challenging, funny or even a little controversial, and not only will people keep coming back, but they will tell their friends about it, too!

Always remember that "word-of-mouth" is the best advertising that you can ever get, and a good blog is perhaps the simplest tool that you can ever use to exploit this fact!

Another tremendous advantage of a blog is that once you have 'posted' whatever it is that you want to say, you can invite your visitors to comment on what you just said.

In essence, your blog becomes a discussion center, and it is totally interactive.

So, the more interesting, controversial or witty your original posting is, the more feedback and comments you are likely to generate, and a lively debate can often ensue.

Your blog has just become the hub of your own small community, bringing together people who all share some common interest.

Such people would all be laser-targeted potential customers for any online business that you are running alongside your blog.

Of course, word of mouth is not the only way that you can use your blog to bring targeted traffic.

There are many, many sites that act as 'blog directories' and one of the most basic steps that you must take when you create your blog is to make sure that these directories are told each and every time you update your site content.

This is a process known as 'pinging' your blog, and it ensures two things.

First, many of the directories that you will 'ping' your site to are very, very popular websites, with millions of viewers every day.

You can (and should) 'ping' your blog to both Google and Yahoo, among many other sites.

If your posting is good enough, it may be 'picked up' and featured by the directory, perhaps even being highlighted on their homepage. That can obviously spark a huge wave of new visitors to your blog.

Secondly, you are probably also aware that the Search Engines are constantly looking for sites with interesting fresh content, which is exactly what you are serving to them by making new posts to your blog. That's why you should really try to update at least once a day, if possible.

This will mean that the spiders from all of the Search Engines will begin to pay regular visits to your site, and you should start to appear in the Search Engine listings pretty quickly.

The final thing you should do to attract blog traffic for free is visit other people's blogs in a similar niche or market as your own, and make sensible comments on their blog.

This means that any readers of the other person's blog may read your comments, like what you say and decide to visit your blog, too!

So, having your own blog is an absolutely free traffic magnet.

It's a "must-do" for anyone who is serious about maximizing their site traffic with a reasonably limited amount of effort, and absolutely no cash outlay whatsoever.

If you are not taking full advantage of all the traffic opportunities presented by blogging, I would seriously recommend that you start right this minute!

CDC Medical Alert

The Center for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.

This virus is called Weary Overload Recreational Killer (WORK). If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues, or anyone else via any means whatsoever - DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private life completely.

If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises. Take two good friends to the nearest store and purchase one or both of the antidotes - Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

You should immediately forward this medical alert to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is controlling your life.

Each week I'll publish some tips or advice. I'll try to cover every subject I can think of, but if you have any suggestions, please send them to me at the e-mail address listed below.

Computer Security Tips – How to Save Your Digital Life

You probably have heard this often, but you really should back up all your important files and data. Do it on a regular schedule, such as every Sunday morning, or the first Monday of the month (at least). Bad things happen in this world, and you must be prepared. A common voltage spike could damage or fry your computer, even if you have a surge protector. Or a power failure could cause you to lose everything since your last save. Your computer may break down or get stolen (it happened to me), or in a moment of inattention you delete a file. Yes, it goes to the Recycle Bin from where you can recover it if you notice what happened and you do not empty the Bin. This is why I recommend you never skip this Recycle Bin step and delete stuff directly.

Did I mention you should always back up your important or main files? And do not forget those priceless photos, favorite music and videos.

You can make the process fairly quick and painless. Here is how I have set things up on one of my computers. On the Desktop, I have a folder called Master. Inside this folder are dozens of sub-folders containing all my main or important files, programs and data. To make a backup, all I have to do is plug in a little thumb drive and copy the one single Master folder. It takes 5 – 10 minutes, while I enjoy a well-earned coffee break!

You can back up your data on CDs or DVDs, but these deteriorate with time, and may not be suitable for long term storage. I suggest a thumb or USB drive, external hard drive or an online storage service, of which many are free. You may even want to use two different backup methods for the really critical stuff you simply cannot lose. If you use a drive or disk, keep them in another house or building in case of fire, floods or other natural disasters. Bank safety deposit boxes are good.

A big advantage of the online storage services is of course that your data is off-site, far from your computer and potential dangers. A disadvantage is that the files and data are out of your control. Most of these services have redundant disk arrays, mirrored data in a second site, etc. Even so, data can get lost, corrupted, deleted, copied or stolen.

Here is another reason to back up your files. You may be working on a large document, make a mess of it and then save the mess. Microsoft Office has tools to help you recover an earlier version of your file. But your own actual backup is like a warm security blanket that will preserve your sanity, and maybe your job and marriage as well.

Backing up your files and folders is even more important for laptop users, because of the risk of loss or theft of the entire computer. Do not keep your backup media or drive in your laptop bag, in case it is stolen or lost along with the laptop. This is where your thumb drive proves its worth; just slip it into your pocket!
