My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat



Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

Well, spring has finally sprung here in northern Michigan. We had some gorgeous weather for about a week, but now it's cold (low 40's) and rainy. But everything really greened up over the last few days and the cold snap isn't supposed to last long, although they did say we could possibly get some snow tomorrow. Luckily, by the end of the week the temperature is supposed to be back into the 50's and 60's.

Can you believe it's almost May already? I swear time just flies by! But, then again, I love spring and summer, so I'm really not complaining.

This summer will be super-exciting for me and I'm really looking forward to July. Both of my oldest kids and their families will be here for a family reunion. (The two youngest live here.)

Mike and Michelle haven't seen each other in 4 years, since Michelle's wedding. Mike has two daughters, and Michelle has only seen the oldest one once, at the wedding, and Riley was only 7 months old at that time. She's 4 now! Michelle has never seen Anna, who will turn 3 in September.

So they're all really excited to see each other, and I'll be happy to have my whole family together. I just wish they didn't live so far away, so we could do it more often.

Then, the day after my kids leave to go back home, my friend from Germany is coming to visit. I haven't seen her in 17 years, since my (ex)husband got out of the Army and we moved back to Michigan.

Life is GOOD! :)

OK, it's time to stop rambling and let you get on with the rest of the issue. LOL

Grins 'n Giggles



A young woman takes her fiancé to meet her parents for the first time. After an elaborate dinner, the mother tells her husband to find out about the young man.

The father invites the fiancé to his library for a drink. "So what are your plans?" The father asks the young man.

"I am a Torah scholar,"he says.

There are normal products that are the bread and butter of a business.

Then there are BLOCKBUSTER products that create businesses from scratch. These are the products that have the power to bring large numbers of new customers into your fold.

I call them "New Blood" products because they bring new blood into your business. That's what your survival depends on. If you don't have a way to get new customers into your marketing funnel, you don't have a business.

Job #1 in business is to have a way to GET new customers.

The key to that is the blockbuster product idea.

I've been fortunate in my career to have a number of these products. For example, "Amazing Formula" was and still is legendary and holds a strong place in Internet marketing history.

"Gimme My Money Now" largely created the whole mini-site craze.

"Push Button Letters" spawned a whole new generation of software programs for creating sales letters.

"Design Dashboard" and "Product Dashboard" are my latest mega hits.

But that's me. Let's talk about YOU. How do YOU create not just an ordinary info product, not just a regular info product, but a bonafide blockbuster that draws hundreds or thousands of new customers into your marketing funnel?

The secret of creating blockbuster products is to NOT do what everybody else does! It's that simple.

Everybody else copies successful products and knocks them off. That's the way to NOT have a blockbuster.

The Marlon Sanders tested, proven formula for creating blockbuster info products is 3-fold:

Step one: Create products are the first on the topic or angle

I like how Michael Masterson calls this "one step removed." You don't wanna be so far out ahead of everybody that you get lost in the wilderness.

You wanna be just one step ahead of the other products in the field. Yet, it needs to be on a topic or angle no one else has covered yet.

In "Red Factor," I called this the underserved market.

In Guerilla Marketing terminology (a topic I covered when I spoke at Joel Comm's outstanding "Next Internet Millionaire" event), this is a "flanking" move.

That means you attack uncontested territory where there is little resistance. You don't battle leading products head on. You go where other people aren't.

One time I heard Billy Simms, the great runner for the Detroit Lions, say that the secret to his success was running where the defense wasn't. That's flanking! Uncontested ground.

Step two: Create products that offer a big benefit

If your product angle or idea has a benefit that isn't clearly different from everything else, you'll be swimming in a sea of "me too" products.

The blockbuster product has to escape the sea of sameness.

Step three: Create products that have undeniable PROOF of value

That proof can be success stories or testimonials.

It can be case studies.

It can be a demonstration.

But the breakthrough product needs PROOF that it delivers on the big benefit.

For "Amazing Formula," I had over 100 pages of testimonials I collected and published as the product sold. An idea I owe to Bob Serling.

"Design Dashboard" had my own web sites as proof as well as some strong success stories.

"Product Dashboard" had a long history of successful product launches as proof I knew how to create info products.

"Push Button Letters" had the benefit of fast results. You could get thet software, use it and get an immediate result yourself, so there was no doubt about the product's value.

"Gimme My Money Now" was a contrarian product that went totally against the prevailing wisdom of the time (and still prevalent today) that you need to create web sites with content in order to get traffic.

Gimme was the first product to advocate the 2-page web site model. That was its uniqueness.

If you follow the 3 steps above, you'll create what I call "Evergreen Profit Trees" that bring in hoards of new customers into your marketing funnel AND grow profits for you year after year after year.

Just by having them on your web site and leaving them there, you'll rake up those tidy little long tail profits. You can have a whole host of these money trees in your online catalog and make easy sales year after year after year.

Two Troubling Internet Issues

Here are two disturbing recent developments from this wonderful thing we call the Web. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are changing Web sites in transit before delivering them to the person who requested them, while other ISPs are restricting or throttling the bandwidth of some users.

Last summer, researchers at the University of Washington tested whether viewers of a page on the University's Web site were seeing html that had been altered while winding its way along the highways and byways of the Internet. Html is the computer language used to build Web pages. The findings were just presented to the Usenix Symposium in San Francisco.

They found 16 instances where ads were being inserted into the Web pages by the visitor's ISP. Most of the ISPs were small except for XO Communications, one of the largest. XO denied the charge, and claimed it must have been done by a reseller of its services. Aside from the very questionable ethics of this practice, critics charge that it undermines the integrity of the affected sites, which of course have no control over ads that are displayed. So far, this procedure is not widespread.

The researchers also found that pop-up blockers in some firewalls changed the underlying page. Other security programs were actually found to have created security vulnerabilities in the pages they processed. Even Internet Explorer injects html into a page when saving it to disk, making it vulnerable to attack when reloaded. The paper's authors call for more study to get a clearer picture of what is going on.

The debate over restricting heavy users of the Internet has raged for a while now in the U.S. ISPs complain that new applications such as videos and music file sharing are gobbling up too much bandwidth, slowing traffic for everyone else. YouTube is now consuming as much bandwidth as the entire Internet did, back in 2000. To me, this simply seems to prove that ISPs have not invested in infrastructure and expanded their capacity over the past 10 years, as the Internet grew and matured.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is looking into complaints that cable giant Comcast has blocked or hindered some file-sharing services. The issue has now boiled over in Canada, where the practice is called traffic shaping or throttling. Some large ISPs claim they have to restrict bandwidth in some cases, for the good of all users. If you watch videos a lot or share your music, you may notice the occasional slowdown, especially during peak periods.

Here is the final word from one of those researchers at the University of Washington: "We just don't know what's going to happen next."
