My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat



Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

It was a sad week in our little town. Once again, tragedy struck and claimed the life of one of our young people. And once again, it was someone my kids and I knew. Let me tell you, going to a funeral for a teenager really stinks. I'm sure some of you have had the same experience, so you know what I mean.

Whitney was a 2005 high school graduate, attending college near Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She was the kind of girl that loved everyone and everyone loved her. Her mom is a teacher at one of the local schools and her dad is an assistant pastor at a church, so most of the town knows the family.

She and 7 other college students, along with a teacher, were on their way back to campus Wednesday evening after setting up a banquet hall for scholarship night, when a semi-truck came through the median on the freeway and collided with the van they were in. 4 students and the teacher were pronounced dead at the scene and the other 4 were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Whitney's older sister, Carly, who attends the same university, called her mom with the tragic news just minutes before a state trooper arrived at her parent's house. The poor woman was alone when she got word of her daughter's death. Her husband was on a missionary trip to Mississippi, helping rebuild after hurricane Katrina.

My son's friend, Matt, who was Whitney's boyfriend of two years, had been planning a big surprise for her for yesterday. He was going to propose to her on what would have been her 19th birthday. Instead of getting engaged, he paid his last respects.

The poor guy looked like he wanted to cry, but he didn't while we were at the funeral home. I was at a loss for words and all I could do was hug him. I told him to look around the room and he'd see how much she was loved by everyone.

The whole thing was very heart-breaking. This is the third teen in 3 years that died in a car accident who was a friend of my kids. Once again the funeral home was filled with students and teachers saying goodbye to someone whose life ended way too soon.

OK, I need to get off that subject. I'm getting teary-eyed again and it's hard to type.

On the more pleasant side of life, I found a house that I love and I might buy it. The only thing that's holding me back from making the decision to do so, is the price. It's way more than I intended to spend. But the house is beautiful! It couldn't be any better if I had designed it myself. I'll let you know next week what I decide to do.

Of course they want to keep their techniques a secret; they'd like to keep all the money to themselves, right? 10 Upsell Strategies To Increase Your Profits

It can be very expensive to attract new customers. You can cut down on those expenses by "upselling" to those new customers. For example, let's say you're selling a computer with a 15" monitor for $1200. You tell people they can upgrade to a 17" monitor for only $200 more. That's upselling! Your goal is to get more money out of the first sale. Below are ten upselling strategies you can use to increase your profits.


1. Deluxe Upsell - You could sell a basic product and tell people for a little more money they can receive the deluxe edition.


2. Money Upsell - You could offer people the rights to sell the product they are buying from you. You could charge an extra $30 for the reproduction rights.


3. Discount Upsell - If you're selling a product people may order again in the future like shaving gel, you could offer them a second can at a discount.


4. Time Upsell - If you're selling a product or service people subscribe to, like a magazine, you could tell them if they subscribe for two years instead of one, they can get half off the cover price.


5. Quantity Upsell - This is similar to the discount upsell. The only difference is you increase the discount by how many products they order. If they order 3 it's a 10% discount, if they order 5 it's a 15% discount.


6. Package Upsell - When you're selling a product you could offer similar products in a package deal. Tell people the other products are cheaper with the package deal versus purchasing them separately.


7. Affiliate Upsell - When you're selling a product you could offer someone else's product as an upsell. You would have to make a commission on the product in order to profit.


8. Free Upsell - You could offer a free sample or trial of your product (your first sale would be free) and then tell people if they order the full version right now they will get a discount.


9. Extra Upsell - There are many things you could charge extra for at the time of sale. It could be gift wrapping, imprinting, custom designs, etc.


10. Extended Upsell - If your product comes with a warranty, you could ask people if they would like to extend the warranty one more year for only $30.


You can use one, or all, of these strategies to increase your profits at the point of sale. Use your imagination to come up with other upsell strategies, too.
