My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat



Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

It's good to be back with you after taking last week off for my daughter's high school graduation and party. We had a wonderful weekend.

The weather was gorgeous - much nicer than any other Memorial Day weekend in northern Michigan that I can remember. Usually it's chilly, and sometimes raining, but it was sunny and in the mid-70's. It couldn't have been more perfect!

The ceremony and party both went off without a hitch. We had a backyard BBQ with a bonfire later in the evening. My friend loaned us her karoake machine, and at about 11:30 PM the teenagers started belting out tunes in the backyard. (The key to not having the neighbors complain is to invite them to the party. Free food and beer seems to do the trick! LOL)

My oldest daughter was here from New York for 4 days and we had a nice visit with her. Both my daughters and I went to a show on Sunday evening called "The Heroes of Rock 'n Roll" where we were treated to 2 hours of hits from the 50's and 60's.

The really amazing thing is that the cast members were so young (early 20's) yet they did some of the best impersonations I've ever seen! We were entertained by such famous stars as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Connie Francis and Ricky Nelson. We had a great time!

But as much fun as the weekend was, nothing could compare to what happened on Wednesday. It was sooooo incredibly shocking and tear-jerking, but in a good way. Yet it was also very heartbreaking for other reasons.

You might remember in the April 30th issue I told you about a 19 year old girl from my town who was killed in a car accident. If you missed it, you can read the editorial here for the whole story:

By now most of you have probably heard the news stories about the mistaken identities of two college girls who were in a car accident on April 26th in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

These two young women looked very much alike and with the bruises and swelling caused by the impact of the crash, they were hard to recognize, even by their own parents. One girl was buried on April 30th and the other was in a coma, but is now awake and recovering in a hospital in southwestern Michigan.

Have you guessed where I'm going with this?

YES, the girl whose funeral we thought we attended is the girl in the hospital, NOT the cemetary!

In one of the strangest turn of events in history, Whitney is alive and doing well. Everyone was in a state of disbelief at first, then as the news sank in, the tears of joy flowed freely. Our whole community is overwhelmed with happiness!

But among all the happy tears are also tears of sadness for the family who thought their daughter, Laura, had survived the horrific crash. They now have to bury her instead of taking her home from the hospital. Unfortunately, in this case one family's joy is another family's sorrow.

Laura's sister started a blog right after the accident to keep their family and friends updated on her condition. Now the blog is keeping us updated on Whitney's condition. I flipped on VH1 yesterday and sat enthralled as a rap artist with colorful language skills hosted "Web Junk 20" where they played 20 videos plucked from the web and played them on cable TV.

Last night I saw that Bravo Channel now airs a show called "Outrageous and Contagious Viral Videos" in the afternoon and evening.

The show features videos found online, focusing on funny, creative and "blooper" style content (though they skipped the foul-mouthed rap star).

Though most of the viral videos currently getting air time on TV get ooh's, aah's and laughter, the fact that "viral videos" are now a part of everyday reality has serious business implications.

For those of you without a teenager or that one "special" friend who always sends the latest joke or video every time you open your in-box, let me bring you up to speed.

A "viral video" is a video played from a web page or as a file on your computer. It goes "viral" because one person sees it and passes it on to more people, who in turn pass it on to their contacts (like a cold virus).

This social interaction is the gas in the video's tank to help it drive around the web, sometimes getting millions of views all over the world.

Now, once we get beyond the "jackass" stunts, bloopers, and giggles, the principles that drive viral videos can help generate serious traffic to business websites.

These videos go viral in a general market because they play to interests and emotions we all share, including: laughter, horror, lust, and sadness. In the absence of any other common factors, we, as humans, all love to laugh, etc.

In business, we've learned that niche markets make it much easier to sell a product or service because we can group people based on profession, physical characteristics, and interests.

For example, a dental supply salesman knows to target dentists and hygienists, and would not bother calling on a craft store.

On the web, a dog trainer knows they should target dog lovers, and if they're really smart, they target owners of a specific breed of dog.

Anyone who sells anything to anyone online can harness the power of viral videos to get traffic to their website simply by targeting their videos at a specific audience and appealing to the same emotions that encourage people to pass along other viral videos.

** Humor **

Put a smile on people's faces, make them laugh, give them a moment's break from a hectic day and they'll love you for it (and want to share it with their friends).

Who says you can't make a "how to" video for your customers wearing a chicken suit!

** Short and Sweet **

The best videos that keep people's attention last under 6 minutes. When starting out, try to keep your videos under 2 minutes, especially if they contain mostly "commercial" content.

** "Ask To Pass" **

Sometimes a simple sentence of "Hey, if you like this video, feel free to pass it along to a friend" at the end of your video will start the viral effect rolling.

** Go Where The Viewers Go ** Once you've distributed your video to your existing customers and asked them to share it, put your videos out where new people can see them.

Start with http://Video.Google.com, iFilm.com, and YouTube.com and then keep your eyes open for new places to post your videos to attract new viewers.

Denise and the rest of the family reading this,

I haven't used VOIP at home yet, but we do have it at my job. There have been some problems.

I've decided that the following is how I would approach any telecom innovations (including 100% cell phones and wireless phones):

1. ALWAYS keep a cheap, plug-into-the-phone-jack, working phone. It doesn't need electricity to work, just the phone jack. I picked up one for less than $10.

2. ALWAYS keep at least the lowest-cost phone plan - to use with your cheap phone, when necessary. If you don't use this plan regularly, at least plug in the cheap phone and call one of your other numbers (even your cell phone) every couple of months to be sure that everything is working.

3. Have a healthy skepticism. NEVER put all your eggs into one basket. If you have two business lines, keep one of them on a traditional land line. That way, you're not totally and completely out of business if the new technology fails.

4. Expect new technology to fail - at least sometimes. Nothing is perfect. And we shouldn't expect it to be. Years ago, when Ma Bell started, there were issues. Nothing has changed the fact that Murphy's Law is in existance.

I feel bad about Cheryl having to go thru this. But it is a lesson to all of us. If we "play" smart with technology, we will live longer because we won't be stressing out over Murphy.
