My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat

Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

I hope you had a great week. Mine was quite out of the ordinary and I hope I don't have another week like this for a long time, or better yet, never! LOL

My 19 year old daughter had told me the week before that she wants to move back home from New York where she's been living with my older daughter and her husband for 6 months. They were all planning a visit home next week for a family get-together anyway, so they were going to load up both of their cars with Melissa's belongings.

Then Michelle and Dan's transmission went out, and it will cost $3000 for a new one, so it seemed they weren't going to be able to come home. But Melissa wouldn't have room in her car for all of her stuff, so I said I'd pay for a rental car for Michelle and Dan so they can be here for the family gathering as well as be able to help Melissa move back.

Whew! Our plans were back on track again. Until Tuesday rolled around...

I got a phone call from Melissa at about 9:30 AM that she had just been in a car accident. Some bozo made an illegal U-turn then realized he was coming up behind a stopped bus, so he whipped his full size pickup truck into reverse real fast to pull around it and backed right into her little Grand Am.

She had just parked, but thank goodness she hadn't started to get out yet because he slammed right into the driver's door! She's covered in cuts from the window shattering in on her, but luckily she saw him just before he hit her so she was able to shield her face with her arms and lean towards the passenger seat.

Most of the cuts are on her arms, so I hate to think what would have happened if she hadn't covered her face, especially since the truck actually touched her elbow! Michelle was in the car with her, but she was fine since she was on the passenger side.

It seems that the guy's insurance will cover it, thank goodness, but we think they're going to call it totaled. We're pretty sure an axle, and possibly the frame, got broken in addition to the door being damaged.

That leaves Melissa car-less, too, so now I'm renting them all an SUV to drive home with so they can put all of Melissa's stuff in it and move her back here. "Cha-ching!" says the Hertz rental car guy. LOL (An SUV is double the price of a car.)

On Wednesday my plans to release my new product went slightly awry. It probably won't be released for about 2 more weeks yet.

And then came Friday...

I've been seeing some bugs in my house recently, earwigs to be specific, and I don't like them. Well, I don't like any bugs, but those things are just UGLY! LOL

I called a handyman to come and cut down a dead tree in my yard and I also asked him to go into the crawl space and spray some bug spray for me. (I won't go into the crawl space because I don't like creepy-crawly things! LOL)

As soon as he opened the door to the crawl space he saw about 200 earwigs. Eeeeeeeeew! He sprayed the crap out of them but they weren't dying very well so I had to call an exterminator. They'll be here tomorrow to spray not only the crawl space, but also the interior and exterior of the house and attached garage. There goes another good chunk of money.

Also on Friday I had to call a repairman for my water softener, so he'll be here tomorrow, too. More money out of my pocket! LOL All the more reason I would like to release my new product right now, but I can't yet. It has to be perfect first. LOL

So how was YOUR week? :~)

Two of my readers are offering you some free reports, so be sure you grab them:

I'll see you here in 2 weeks. Until then, be profitable!

Is Your Writing the Best It Can Be?
4 Tips to Editing Like an Expert
By Cheryl Pickett

You've worked hard to write an article or maybe even an entire E-book and it's finally done. You're ready to hit the post button any minute now and that's a good thing. However, are you truly sure it's ready to go?

Before you send it on, stop for a moment and think about whether you've done all you can to make your piece shine. After all, that writing is now your ambassador to the world of your reader. If it appears unpolished or thrown together, your reader may think you don't take your work seriously and, of course, that's not the goal.

How do you put your best foot forward? Besides skilled writing, another key to making a great impression is strong editing. Here are four tips to help you get started:

1. Read Your Work Aloud

This is one of the best strategies you can use to find mistakes. Read at a normal pace as if you were sharing it with someone else. You may be surprised at what you catch even if you've done some editing already.

2. Set the Piece Aside for a Few Hours

Setting a piece aside for a significant period of time is another highly recommended editing strategy. Similar to reading aloud, you'll have a fresher perspective and mistakes should stick out.

3. Make a List of Your Most Common Mistakes

Do you routinely confuse "your" and "you're" or do you use certain words repeatedly when others words would work better? Make a list of problems as you edit and look for patterns. Be certain to check for these items until you improve and catch them during the writing process.

4. Only for the Web vs. Perfection

As you work through your editing, don't fall into the trap of either of these extremes. Some info-preneurs seem to think standards are lower because an article is just going into a free directory or an E-book is not as formal as print material. Not true! Again, your reputation is at stake, so a half-baked piece won't make the impression you're looking for.

On the other hand, there are more important things in life than comma placement. Most people will not condemn you for the occasional punctuation or spelling error. Work to get your piece as close to flawless as possible, but don't agonize and spend so much time worrying about perfection that you never post or publish anything at all.

Lastly, it's usually a good idea to have someone else edit your work too. You probably don't need it for short articles, but just about anything else will benefit from an outsider's point of view.

A film crew was on location deep in the desert. One day an Old Indian went up to the director and said, "Tomorrow rain." The next day it rained.

A week later, the Indian went up to the director and said, "Tomorrow storm." The next day there was a hailstorm.

"This Indian is incredible," said the director. He told his secretary to hire the Indian to predict the weather. However, after several successful predictions, the old Indian didn't show up for two weeks.

Finally the director sent for him. "I have to shoot a big scene tomorrow," said the director, "and I'm depending on you. What will the weather be like?"

The Indian shrugged his shoulders. "Don't know," he said. "My radio is broken."

Expert Advice

Each week I'll publish some tips or advice. I'll try to cover every subject I can think of, but if you have any suggestions, please send them to me at the e-mail address listed below.

"Will this product really bring in $3000 in 7 days?"

That's the question I was asked by a reader who had just bought (he hadn't even read it yet!) a report through my affiliate link. The sales page did NOT claim anybody would make a specific amount of money, but it did say that the author of the report had made $3000 in one week.

Here's the scoop, people... NO ebook, NO method, NO software is going to make money FOR you. YOU control your own money-making destiny.

You MUST implement the methods you learn about or use the software that you buy, before anything can work for you.

If an ebook says the author made $3000 in a week using A,B and C advertising methods, then you'll probably need to use A,B and C, too. Don't expect to use only method A and get the same results.

Or worse yet, don't read the ebook and say "that won't work" or "that's stupid" and then not try it. It's a sure bet you won't get anywhere without trying something.

Remember, NO amount of reading will get you anywhere without taking action on what you learn. And the best way to know if something works is to TRY it and be persistant with it...

Don't give up if it doesn't work out the way you planned on your first try. There are so many variables - your ad, your sales letter, the price, etc. - that could be the root of the problem. Try changing one thing and see if that helps. Always tweak and test several times, if necessary, before assuming your product won't sell.
