Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue. In the last issue I told you I had seen a skunk and a 'possum hanging around my backyard, and they appeared to be living under my deck. And I told you I hate critters... remember that? LOL I ended up calling a pest control company and the guy brought some traps. When I catch a critter he comes to take them away and euthanize them. Would you believe I've caught TWO skunks so far? For all I know there's a whole family of them under my deck! It looks like I got a mama and a baby, but the daddy must be around somewhere. My neighbor shot the 'possum in his yard, though, so that saved me some money because I have to pay per trip to have those darn varmints picked up. Oh, and he promised me the "critter lady of the year" award because I'm ridding the neighborhood of unwanted visitors. LOL Hopefully they're all gone now, but I guess time will tell. Hey, I found a really cool video the other day. You really need to check it out. It seems there's a new candidate for President. Find out who it is here: WHO'S Running for President?!? It's time for me to stop rambling and let you get on with the rest of the issue. I'll see you here in two weeks. Until then, be profitable! Feature Article Spam By Any Other Name Is Still Spam by Denise Hall Nothing gets my goat more than checking my email inbox and finding a bunch of canned meat cluttering it up. You know what I mean - spam, otherwise known as unsolicited email. But we all get it, unfortunately, and I normally just delete it and go on with my day. However, in my opinion, there's one thing even worse than receiving spam from a spammer who randomly sends his crap to any and all email addresses he can get his hands on. And that one thing is receiving spam from someone who joined my opt-in list. Let me explain... Today I received a reply to the welcome message that my new subscribers receive when they sign up for my newsletter. It's not unusual for subscribers to email me, so I opened it, expecting to find a question from this new reader. What I found, instead, was this: "Thanks for the offer. However, if you want me to purchase your product I would for exchange that you join my business opportunity. You see it normally cost $249.00 however as a sales associate it only $49.00. However, if you like to subscribe to the service I would reimburse your $49.00. Website (deleted) Name (deleted) Phone # (deleted)" Of all the nerve, telling me he'll buy my product if I buy his! I was furious, to say the least. Now, I tend to be a bit cranky first thing in the morning before I've had a few cups of coffee, so what happened next is not entirely my fault. :) I shot him back this email: "I'd like to point you in the right direction to marketing online. If you were to actually read this information you received from me, you'd find that I wasn't trying to sell you anything. This welcome message includes fr'ee gifts, not products for sale. When you sign up for someone's info or newsletter, as you did with mine, don't use the "you sign up for mine and I'll sign up for yours" ultimatum. YOU signed up for MY info. Period. That being said, you are welcome to unsubscribe at any time, but please do not expect me to buy your products simply because you're telling me you won't buy from me unless I do. I find that quite insulting." A bit harsh? Maybe. But I don't appreciate being spammed by my subscribers. My readers are supposed to be my friends. There's a right way to market products and a wrong way, and THAT is definitely the wrong way! To begin with, does this guy really expect me to believe he'll buy my product AND he'll reimburse me the $49 I would spend for his? I don't know him, and at this point he's a spammer in my eyes, so why should I believe him? (Not to mention the fact that he'll go broke if he's buying everything in sight and reimburses everyone who buys his program.) A more acceptable way for this guy to contact me about his program would go something like this: "Hey Denise, how are you? I'm new to your newsletter list, but I thought you might want to check out this program. I've had great luck with it. It does X, Y and Z. If you'd like to join, I'll even reimburse your signup fee." But... even that is a slightly shady marketing technique. It's called "reverse marketing" because he signed up to receive information from me, not vice versa. Yet he thinks it's OK to send me his product info. Wrong! It's perfectly acceptable to contact people you know and tell them about products or programs you like, but do it the correct way. Build a relationship first. If you know the person well enough, then it's fine to ask them to visit a site you recommend. Or you can offer to do a joint venture with them. But give them a good reason to be interested in you and your product. Don't just reply to people's emails with your own product sales pitch and think it's alright. It's not. And for Heaven's sake, don't set your email client to spit back an autoreply with your marketing message to everyone who sends you an email. Apparently that's what this nimrod did, because in addition to the "reply" to my welcome email, I also got his "reply" to my newsletter issue that he received the same day. It was the exact same message with all grammatical errors included. Sending your marketing message to someone by way of reverse marketing is one way to get people to notice you, but for the wrong reasons. Reverse marketing is just spam by another name. By Denise Hall Every netrepreneur knows that the most important aspect of building a business is responsive leads. Whether you publish an ezine or just send occasional sales letters via e-mail, if you don't get a good response, you won't have a profitable business. The old saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" applies here. You can send offers to your prospects, but you can't make them buy. So how do you turn those prospects into buyers? How do you get them to read, not just skim or delete, your ezine or sales letter? Make them offers they just can't refuse! Offline businesses frequently have "Buy one, get one free" specials. Or "Buy one, get one 1/2 off." Or "Today only" sales. Online businesses need to use those same marketing principles. While the rules on the internet are a bit different than offline marketing, many of the same concepts can be applied with the same results. How many times have you seen an item on sale that was tempting, but you wanted to think about it before handing over your money? By all means, think about it, especially if it's a large purchase. But if the special is only for "today" or "this weekend", you'll have to decide a little faster, won't you? Have you noticed that the checkout area at stores always has candy bars, magazines and other inexpensive items on display? Those candy bars sure look good, don't they? The headline on that magazine makes you want to read the article, doesn't it? Those items are put there on purpose so you'll buy something else while you wait in line to pay for your other purchases. It's called "impulse buying." Retailers have used it for years. Another offline marketing tactic is "loss leaders." Retailers advertise an item at or below cost to get customers into their store. Once the customers are there, they'll normally buy more than just the advertised special. So the retailer takes a loss on one product to sell other products that will bring profits. Pretty clever, huh? These concepts can, and should, be used for online businesses. Offer your customers a freebie or second item at half price with their purchase of any product at regular price. Or 25% off "Today Only" on one or more of your products. Customers like to shop for bargains, but on the internet your website, ezine or sales letter can get lost in the vast array of reading material potential customers see everyday. Make your offer stand out. Your customers will want that candy bar if it comes with a second one for half price. They'll need your newest product if they get one of your other products for $10 off the regular price. So dare to make them an offer they can't resist! Your customers will get a great deal and you'll have more sales.
