My 2 Cents Worth - Editor's Chit-Chat

Hi All!

Welcome to another Sunday with yours truly and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your day. :~) If you're new today, a warm welcome to you. I hope you'll enjoy the issue.

Did you remember to set your clocks back an hour last night? In typical "Denise fashion" I completely forgot until I got up this morning. But they're fixed now and I know what time it is. :~)

I must have really had a brain cramp last night. I also forgot to get my coffee ready for this morning. My coffeemaker has a timer on it so I always set it to brew shortly before I get up. But, nooooo, this morning I had to make it before I could drink it. I hate that. When I get up, I need my coffee - pronto! LOL

I think my problem is that I've overworked myself this past week. For the two weeks prior I lost a lot of work time with my friend being in the hospital, then passing away. So I got really backed up on my work and I've been trying to make up for lost time ever since. Today I should probably take a break, huh?

But you know the old saying "there's no rest for the weary" and I guess that applies to me, because I need to go outside and rake the yard again. This is the 6th time, for Pete's sake! My friend has come over twice with her John Deere riding mower in the past 3 weeks and gotten it all cleaned up. Then the trees dumped more leaves as soon as she went home. LOL At least this time it's not nearly as bad, probably only 10% of what was there before.

She also brought her John Deere self-propelled lawnmower with a bag and I used that. That was kind of funny because I've never used a self-propelled lawnmower before. She had it in 3rd gear and it tried to take me for a walk. LOL (Ya gotta realize, I'm only 5'4", weigh 110 lbs. and my arms aren't much bigger than a toothpick.) I had to put it in 1st gear just to keep control of it, instead of it controlling me. I finally got used to it, though, and was able to put it in 2nd gear. Whoo hoo! LOL

OK, enough mindless, prattle. :~) It's time to let you get on with the rest of the issue.

I'll see you here in 2 weeks. Until then, be profitable!

Denise

I'm Talking, But is Anyone Listening?
By Denise Hall

Internet marketing is a wonderful thing, but it has it's drawbacks. For instance, if you own a brick and mortar store you have a physical presence that gets noticed. Customers will find you purely by chance by walking or driving down the street where your store is located. If they didn't know you existed before, they do now.

But online your business is buried among millions of websites. People can't just stumble upon it accidently. Do you feel like you're just spinning your wheels and getting nowhere? Or you're talking, but no one's listening? How, then, do you establish your presence and make your site known?

Stand up and shout it to the world! Not literally, of course, but figuratively speaking. You need to advertise and promote constantly. You must get your name and website "out there" for the world to see.

More importantly, you need to make a lasting impression so the next time a customer is in the market for your type of product, they'll remember you over someone else with similar products.

It's called "name-branding." Get a catchy slogan or motto that people will associate with your name and website. Publish an ezine or report to build a mailing list of potential customers. Establish yourself as an expert in your field.

Once you've got a mailing list, you need to keep your readers wanting more information. You can't just send ads and expect them to hand over their money. You'll have them hitting the "unsubscribe" link faster than you can say "unsubscribe."

They need to get good, reliable information to build their trust in you. Once you've got their trust, you've got clients/readers for life. Give them solid, helpful information and they'll listen. Show them that you care about their needs and wants, not just the size of your wallet.

You also have to grab their attention. Your subject lines, editorials and ad copy must make them want to read more. Your newsletter or report doesn't help anyone if it gets deleted without being read, most of all you. You're wasting your time if no one's paying attention.

Once you've established that trusting relationship and learned to grab a reader's attention, you'll know without a doubt that when you talk, people will listen.

Expert Advice

Each week I'll publish some tips or advice. I'll try to cover every subject I can think of, but if you have any suggestions, please send them to me at the e-mail address listed below.

9 Ways To Maintain Profits In A Slow Economy

1. Sell more back-end products to your existing customer base. You already created rapport, trust and proved your credibility to them, so they'll be likely to purchase again.

2. Make it a practice to upsell to new and existing customers. After they decide to buy one product, offer them another product while they're still in the buying mood.

3. Cross promote your products and services with other businesses that aren't in direct competition. with you. You'll reach a wider audience at less cost.

4. Create joint venture deals with other businesses. You can expand your product line and target other profitable markets at a lower cost.

5. Start an affiliate program for your business. You will be able to spend less profits on risky advertising and spend more money on guaranteed sales.

6. Trade advertising with other businesses to save money. You could trade e-zine ads, banners ads, links, print ads, etc.

7. Add low cost bonuses to your offer that have a high perceived value. It could be ebooks, members-only sites, consulting, e-reports, etc.

8. Use viral marketing to promote your business on the Internet. Give away free stuff with your ad copy included on it so others can give it away and your ads will be seen by more people.

9. Follow up with all your prospects. You can use a free e-zine, a follow-up autoresponder, an update or reminder list, etc.

It's Your Dime - Reader's Feedback

You may remember in my last issue I told you I'd been plagued with product thieves and an email hacker. Mark wrote in reference to that...

Hi Denise,

Just so you know, you're not alone. My cPanel IP deny file is about 2 dozen strong with IPs I've banned from my ecommerce sites for circumventing the order buttons and attempting to download my products without paying.

I've also had hackers find their way into my article directories and helpdesk scripts to facilitate their spambots.

I always have one of us monitoring our server logs when we are running sales, to catch these buggers. Someone should code a script that compares IPs on download pages to IPs in IPN files of successful purchases to determine who should be there 'automatically' and "boot" the ones who shouldn't. This would be a good thing for people who use the standard paypal button without something like JVManager.

Keep fighting, "the good guys always win" :-)

Cheers,

Mark.
